Monte Mele and the “Paths of Silence”: Trekking among Selenite, Panoramas and Uncontaminated Nature

Just a few steps from our farmhouse, a world opens up that will surprise anyone who loves walking in nature.

Monte Mele, the relief that dominates the hinterland of Realmonte, is a place where geology, rural history e biodiversity intertwine in a unique landscape, far off the beaten tourist track.

Here, amidst the scents of aromatic herbs and views ranging from the sea to inland reliefs, trekking is not just sport, but a sensory and cultural experience at the same time.

A Territory Shaped by Time

Monte Mele marks the beginning of the famous Sicilian Sulphur Seriesa rare geological environment, where massive gypsum and selenite outcrop in spectacular shapes. Unlike the coast, dominated by the White marl, here the ground lights up with crystalline reflections.

La selenite, with its crystals “lance-iron” o “dovetailed”, It literally glows in the sun, especially after rain, when dust settles and leaves translucent, luminous surfaces.

Walking along the inter-pasture paths that lead up to the summit, it is easy to see glassy flakes embedded in the chalky rock: a small natural spectacle that tells the very ancient history of the Mediterranean and its stages of desiccation.

Trekking from Home Balata: A Route through Nature and Scenery

Being located right on the slopes of the, House Balata is the ideal starting point for exploring Monte Mele on foot. The route, of medium difficulty, takes about 1-1.5 hours to climb along dirt roads and paths trodden by local shepherds and hikers.

The Natural Belvedere

The most impressive vantage point is located near the summit. From here, the view embraces:

  • South-West, the costs of Realmonte, the Scala dei Turchi and the deep blue of the Sicily Channel;
  • in the North-East, l’agricultural hinterland and the chalky reliefs accompanying the SS115.

Along the way, selenite outcrops become more and more evident, embedded in the side slopes and wind-eroded areas.

The Highest Chalk Outcrop Point

Although it is a less scenic place, but one of great geological fascination, here the massive gypsum occurs in impressive structures, with selenite crystals that can reach up to 10-15 cm. It is a true open-air museum for those who love nature in its most primeval form.

A Rich and Surprising Ecosystem

Monte Mele is not just geology: it is a mosaic of life.

Flora

  • Wild Orchids, especially in spring;
  • Dwarf Palm and Alpha Grass, typical of dry Sicilian areas;
  • Thyme, Sage and Wild Rosemary, that perfume the air around House Balata.

Fauna

  • Porcupines, They often leave their quills along the paths;
  • Foxes, visible in the twilight;
  • Waglerian Lizard, an endemic species that likes to warm itself on selenite stones.

Rural history and legends

Amidst haystacks, chalky stone ruins and old mining essays, the landscape recounts the peasant life of yesteryear; and there is no shortage of legends: tales of treasures hidden by Saracen pirates, protected by spells and only visible on particular nights, when a green or blue light would indicate the exact spot to dig. Tales that add a touch of mystery to the walks.
